Redelegation
Redelegation lets you move stake between validators without the unbonding wait.
Overview
| Aspect | Unbonding | Redelegation |
|---|---|---|
| Wait time | 3 days | Instant |
| Rewards gap | Yes | No |
| Slashing risk | During unbonding | Immediate transfer |
| Repeat | Anytime | 3-day cooldown |
How It Works
Validator A → Validator B (instant)
Your stake:
- Immediately leaves Validator A
- Immediately active with Validator B
- Starts earning rewards from B right away
Performing Redelegation
Via CLI
monod tx staking redelegate \
<source-validator> \
<destination-validator> \
<amount>alyth \
--from <your-key> \
--chain-id <chain-id>
Via Keplr
- Go to Staking
- Select your current validator
- Click Redelegate
- Choose new validator
- Enter amount
- Confirm
Redelegation Cooldown
After redelegating, those specific tokens cannot be redelegated again for 3 days:
Day 0: A → B (allowed)
Day 1: B → C (blocked - same tokens)
Day 3: B → C (allowed)
!!! warning "Plan Carefully" Choose your destination validator carefully. You're committed for 3 days.
Partial Redelegation
Redelegate any portion of your stake:
# Move 1000 LYTH from A to B
monod tx staking redelegate valoperA valoperB 1000000000000000000000alyth
Remaining stake stays with original validator.
Multiple Redelegations
You can redelegate from multiple sources in one day:
A → B (1000 LYTH) ✅
C → B (500 LYTH) ✅
A → D (500 LYTH) ✅ (different destination)
But not the same tokens twice:
A → B (1000 LYTH) ✅
B → C (1000 LYTH) ❌ (same tokens, within 3 days)
Tracking Redelegations
Via CLI
# View active redelegations
monod query staking redelegations <your-address>
Shows:
- Source and destination validators
- Amount
- Completion time (when you can redelegate again)
Use Cases
Better Validator Found
You discovered a validator with:
- Lower commission
- Better uptime
- More reputation
Redelegate instead of waiting 3 days.
Validator Issues
Your validator is:
- Frequently jailed
- Raising commission
- Unresponsive
Move stake immediately.
Rebalancing
Spread stake across multiple validators without gaps in rewards.
Redelegation vs Unbonding
Choose redelegation when:
- ✅ Switching validators
- ✅ Want continuous rewards
- ✅ Know your destination
Choose unbonding when:
- ✅ Need liquid tokens
- ✅ Exiting staking entirely
- ✅ Uncertain about future plans
Slashing Considerations
When you redelegate:
- Past misbehavior from source validator can still slash
- Future misbehavior only affects destination validator
- Evidence window applies to when the infraction occurred
FAQ
Can I redelegate to multiple validators at once?
Not in a single transaction. Redelegate separately to each.
What if destination validator gets jailed?
You stop earning until they unjail, or redelegate again (after cooldown).
Is there a fee for redelegation?
Normal transaction gas fee. No special redelegation fee.
Can I redelegate unbonding tokens?
No. Once unbonding starts, tokens cannot be redelegated.
What's the maximum number of active redelegations?
7 per source-destination pair. More pairs are allowed.
